Italian Military Geographic Institute
Historical Museum of Italian Cartography
Via Cesare Battisti, 10-12, 50129, Florence
Guided tour of the Historical Museum of Italian Cartography (at the Italian National Mapping Agency), with a visit of the library, the collection of instruments and the cartography production department.
The Historical Museum of Italian Cartography hosts a valuable collection of maps dating from XVI century and instruments used to carry out works of astronomy, geodesy, topography, photogrammetry and calculations.
The instruments are more than 400, the ancient ones were part of the collection existing before 1861 and belonged to the dissolved topographic offices of the pre-existing Italian States. When Italian Geographic Military Institute (IGMI) was established, the collection was expanded to include instruments designed and built by the internal staff. Even today, all the instruments used for carrying out IGMI activities are part of the museum when obsolete.
